Root canals are needed when either bacteria or trauma reach the nerve inside the tooth, causing a localized infection. Swelling and pain may not be present, but once the nerve becomes infected, it must be cleaned and treated via root canal therapy (RCT). Afterwards, a crown or cap is often needed to prevent further fracturing of the tooth.
